Curtis Reynold Smith

Curtis Reynold Smith was born to the late Mattie S. Jones on December 9, 1946 in Richmond, Virginia. His soul returned to the creator on Saturday, March 5, 2022, in Fort Washington, Maryland. During his formative years, Mattie united with Carlton L. Jones in marriage and Curtis and his mother were embraced whole heartedly into the Jones Family. Mattie and Curtis soon became members of St. John Baptist Church where he served on the usher board until he left for college. Curtis, affectionately known as “Butch” spent his young and adolescent years in the Charles City and Richmond, Virginia area. Curtis loved watching sports and one of his favorite past times was his visits to Charles City where he enjoyed eating Aunt Gerald’s and Aunt Irene’s cooking. Curtis adored his mother and enjoyed traveling and discovering the world with her. Curtis had a passion for football and played on the Maggie L. Walker football team. Upon graduating from Maggie L. Walker High School in 1965, he then attended Howard University majoring in Zoology and Psychology and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Federal City College in 1972. He continued to expand his knowledge by completing numerous Graduate School courses from the University of the District of Columbia as well as Gallaudet. Curtis had an illustrious career in law enforcement, holding many positions to include Chief Investigator for Operations and Acting Chief of Administrative Services for Operations with a promotion to Captain in 1989. In October of 1989, he was promoted to Acting Chief of Police of the University of the District of Columbia. During his tenure at the University of the District of Columbia, Curtis met Karen Setoria Washington, and after a long courtship they joined in matrimony in October 2008 among family and friends. Curtis and Karen spent many years traveling, enjoying friends, and enjoying their retirement together. Curtis is survived by his wife, Karen Washington Smith, stepdaughter, Elleecia Washington, grandchildren, Shardae and Michael Washington, great grandson, Zamir Riley Washington, devoted cousin, Thomas E. Jones III, devoted family friend Dorothy Stewart, and a host of cousins, friends, and colleagues. A graveside service will be held 11AM Saturday, March 12, 2022 at St. John Baptist Church, Charles City, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial contribution be made to the Carlton L. Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O St. John Baptist Church.
