Edna Odessa Jones

Edna Odessa Jones, a luminary of love and strength, peacefully entered her heavenly home on December 7, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on September 17, 1938, to William and Beulah Harris, she grew up in Charles City, VA, attending Kimages High School and finding solace in the warm embrace of her faith at New Vine Baptist Church. Later in life, she became an essential part of Gilfield Baptist Church, where her quiet strength spoke volumes. A woman of few words, she expressed love through dedicated service. As an usher, trustee, assistant superintendent of Sunday School, and a member of the Women’s choir, hospitality ministry, and youth ministry, she shared her compassion with all who crossed her path. Not only a woman of faith, but she was also a quick-witted individual. Her spirited banter was a testament to her sharp mind. A snazzy dresser with an impeccable sense of style, she adorned herself with jewelry that reflected her vibrant personality. Dedicating her life to diverse roles, she transitioned seamlessly from her early days as a line worker at Miller Manufacturing to her time as a male fashion purchaser at Thalhimer’s Department Store. Transitioning seamlessly, she took on responsibilities as a diligent worker at the Post Office, followed by a period of service as a driver for Bay Transit and a bus aide for Charles City Schools. In addition to her professional endeavors, she generously contributed to civic life as a devoted volunteer at the voting polls. Her caring nature and commitment to the community were evident in every role she embraced. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Warren E. Jones and son Warren C. Jones. Her legacy lives on through her devoted sons, Kenneth Jones and O’Ryan Jones, stepdaughters Ellen Tyler, Tiffany Scott (Tracey) and Leatrice Dance, grandchildren Kendra, Kristen, Jamaica, Lakhesia, Kayla, Samiya, Justin, and Kingston Jones, Diamond and Destin Scott, and Shaun Dance, and great-grandchildren Yancey, One, Kenley and Chase Jones. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by her sister, Dorthea Pierson (Arthur), and now finds a joyous reunion with her heavenly siblings Iris Grimes, Gwendolyn Hatcher (Donald), and Russell Harris (Irene). She is also preceded by her brother-in-law Arthur Jones (Gloria) and is survived by her brother-in-law Harold Jones (Mary) and sister-in-law Juanita Brown (Earnest). A woman of strength, resilience, quick wit, and profound love, her quiet but impactful presence touched the lives of many. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the heavenly choir she once graced with her earthly presence. A funeral service will be held 1:30pm, Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Gilfield Baptist Church, 6640 Church Ln, Charles City, VA 23030. A viewing will be held from 6pm-8pm, Friday December 15, 2023, at Vincent Funeral Home, Providence Forge, VA.
