Hilda Jones Cotman

On May 22, 2025, Hilda Mae Jones Cotman transitioned from earth to heaven. She was born on September 28, 1933 to the late James Henry Jones and Bertha Williams Jones. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stanley S. Cotman, and her siblings, Cleveland, Henry, Horace Elmo and Charlie Jones, Clara Dillard, Ella Harris, Mamie Bradby, and Iris Jeanette Adkins. Growing up she wanted to enlist in the Women Army Air Core. However, she chose another career path, prior to her marriage, she attended Burnside Medical Center in Philadelphia studying nursing. She was a couponer before it was popular and rebates were made for her competitive nature. She would see how much money she could save with her coupons and what she could get for free. She entered many contests and won free coffee for a year from Chucks’ Supermarket. Hilda loved baking her black walnut and cold oven pound cakes. Her pear preserves were second to none. Her memorabilia held many blue ribbons from the Charles City County Fair, from dandelion wine, flowers, and desserts. She treasured the cards that everyone sent to her. She loved to keep her mind sharp with Scrabble. She said we are NACL of the earth. Her favorite hymn, Amazing Grace, the unmerited favor of God would save a wretch like me. God can do all things but fail. She is survived by her son, Stanley D. Cotman, Sr. (Joyce); daughters, Angela Cotman, Cathy Cotman Brown (devoted caregiver), Crystal C. Wells (Brian) and Jewel C. Wells (Edward). grandchildren, Tabatha A. Dunlap, Stanley D. Cotman, Jr., Brian M. Wells, Benjamin M. Wells (Allison), Jacquelyn D. Brown, Jasmine D. Brown, and Rafael R. Wells; great grandsons, Devron and Lavon Cotman, Samir Dunlap; and Benson Wells; a host of nieces, Lois Jones, Lynnette Atkins, Myrtle Graves, Cora Phipps, Edith Craddock, Christine Bradby, and Gladys Hawkins. Larry Tyler, Fred Adkins, and Michael Jones were always ready to help. Dedicated caregiver, Sheila Wallace, dedicated friends, Martha Jones, Florence Silver and Patricia Tabb and other relatives and friends. Emmett Wimbush and April Hernandez shared love for Hilda Mae. A funeral service will be held 2PM Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, VA 23140. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment will follow in the Little Elam Baptist Church Cemetery.
