John Lovil Burrell

John Lovil Burrell, 98, of Laneview, VA (Essex County), entered eternal life, on March 25, 2021. He was born in Middlesex County, VA to James H. and Jennie C. Burrell on May 5, 1922. John, also known as “Johnny” was a long-standing and the eldest member of Union Shiloh Baptist Church in Jamaica, VA. He was a man of faith and a believer in God. He was humble, compassionate, giving, and always willing to serve others. He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting, gardening, and mowing grass. He was very handy with the ability to fix anything. He could often be seen cruising country roads on his tracker with a faithful four-legged companion following. Not to forget, after a long day’s work, he enjoyed watching WWE wrestling matches. John married Geraldine West in King and Queen County circa 1945, remaining in love and married until her death January 11, 1995. Their union bore the blessing of eleven children. To support his family John worked as a logger and waterman. He loved taking his sons, grandsons, and nephews “on the water” to fish. Many could count on “Pop or Uncle Johnny” to be their fishing budding. You could also bet he’d be the one providing fresh fish for cookouts, parties, and reunions. John remained active and fairly independent until his death, persevering, even overcoming COVID-19 in December 2020. He will always be known for having great strength, a strength he would give God glory for! In his own words for his 98th birthday he stated “I’m 98 years young” and that is how he’d want to be remembered. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine, children John Thomas, Cheryl, and Zelda Burrell; grandson Anthony Brown; siblings James Burrell, Linell Burrell, Ida Jackson, Francis Burrell, Fannie Carter, Abraham Burrell, and Maria Tuppings. He is survived by children Walter (Annie Mae) Burrell of Laneview, VA, Quincy Burrell of Ardmore, PA, George (Ellie) Burrell of Laneview, VA, Wilhelmina Richards of Glen Allen, VA, James Robert Burrell of Philadelphia, PA, William Burrell of Glen Allen, VA, Calvert Burrell of Philadelphia, PA, and Alison (Michael) Coleman of Hustle, VA; Daughter-in-law Marion Burrell of Saluda; Grandchildren Erica (LeSique) Burrell, Walter Burrell II, Johnathan (Ida) Burrell, Octavius Burrell, Randy Brown, Georgetta Fuel, Douglas Parker, Denova Surles, Antonio Lee, April Lee, Astra Burrell, Brandy Burrell, Jerome Drummond, George Burrell, Monique Burrell, Corey Burrell, Tyheeria Burrell, Shawn (Susan) Richards, Jeremy Richards, Amanda (Martin) Abrams, Pamela Richards-Floyd, Charmaine Burrell, Jasmine Burrell, and Michael Coleman II, a host of great and great-great-grandchildren; Siblings Bernice Peterson of Laneview, VA and Tiny Burrell of Philadelphia, PA; Sisters-in-law Mary Burrell of Tappahannock, VA and Joyce (George) Hundley of Center Cross, VA; Nieces, Nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Two nieces devoted to their Uncle Johnny, Laverne Miller, and Tracey Roye. A funeral service will be on Saturday, April 3 at 11:00 am at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St, West Point, VA. The viewing will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Friday, April 2, 2021, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Union Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, 3 Union Shiloh Ln, Jamaica, VA 23079.
