Mrs. Marcia Burnham Meador

Marcia’s three year battle with cancer came to an end on March 21, 2013. She was 56 years old. Words won’t capture the person and life of this incredible woman, but if a single word is chosen, Marcia was “wonderful”. She loved life, loved people, loved new experiences, loved to travel and loved her family and friends. She was focused, driven, loyal and dependable, but she was also fun and engaging with a quick wit and an infectious laugh. Her high school classmates selected her as “the life of the party”, but she wasn’t a party girl, she enjoyed people and her natural enthusiasm was contagious. She dedicated her life to teaching and serving others. For over 30 years she worked for Cooperative Extension Services in Maine, Florida and Virginia providing leadership in youth (4H) and adult programs. Marcia was a Maine native and received her bachelor degree from the University of Maine at Orono. She earned a masters degree from the University of Florida. Beyond devoting her life to her family and a busy work career, she made time to serve others by volunteering as a founding member of the Chickahominy Ruritan Club and as a rising leader in the American Camping Association, she served most recently as the president of the Virginia Chapter. She was skilled in so many activities that included decorating, scrap booking, gardening, and cooking. Marcia enjoyed volleyball, kayaking, biking, camping, hiking and just being outdoors. And if the fish were biting she’d always cast “just one more time” until all the worms were gone. She made every holiday an event and enjoyed decorating her home with the changing seasons. In Virginia, Marcia leaves behind her husband of 28 years, Mark B. Meador; their son, Matthew T. Meador; and sister-in-law, D. Susan Meador. Her large extended family in Maine includes her mother, Jane A. Burnham; sisters, Diana Sommers and Carol Burnham; four brothers, Charles, Stanwood, David and Joseph Burnham; the wives, husbands and partners of her siblings; 9 nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Marcia’s father, Charles R. Burnham passed away in 2009. While Marcia truly loved flowers, it is her wish that those wishing to contribute in her honor will make a donation to the American Cancer Society. Marcia’s family will receive friends on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, VA 23140 (phone 804 966 7075). At 3:00 p.m. a memorial service will be conducted. Those that wish to make brief comments about their experiences with Marcia Meador will be encouraged to contribute at that time.
