Rae Crawley Smith

Rae. C Smith 79, a gem of love, joy and generosity, affectionately known as “Oma”, was born on February 28, 1944 to the late Charlesanna B. Crawley and Thomas Crawley of Charles City County, Virginia. She transitioned on December 22, 2023, in her earthly home. Rae was a true beauty who left a mark on everyone she encountered. Rae accepted Christ at an early age at Gilfield Baptist Church. She married her soul-mate on September 18, 1965, Gilbert A. Smith. Within the 58 years of marriage, 3 children were made in love; Tonya Smith, Gilbert “Todd” Smith (Tressy) and Tracie Upshaw. Not only a woman of Christ, faith and family, she was a classy lady who was always well-put together, indulged in self-care, making memories with her grand-daughters, traveling with her husband and enjoyed the finer things in life as she shopped with her grand-daughters every Saturday. Dedicating her life to her family, she enjoyed yearly summer trips with her husband, children, daughter in law, late brother, niece and nephew. Oma enjoyed spending time with her grand-daughters as they created many memories for a lifetime. Rae enjoyed spending time with her late brother and best friend, Leslie Crawley. In addition, Rae graduated Valedictorian from Ruthville High School then went on to continue her education at Virginia State University. Rae’s roles in her career included the Charles City Health Department, Thalhimer’s Information Technology Center and Commonwealth Virginia Department of Information Technology, from which she retired. Rae was preceded in death by her parents Charlesanna and Thomas; her stepfather, Edward S. Christian, and her beloved brother, Leslie Crawley. Oma’s legacy continues to live on through her devoted husband, Gilbert A, Smith, children, Tonya, Todd (Tressy) Smith and Tracie Upshaw; and her grand-daughters Tabatha Rae and Tiffany Yvette Smith. In addition to her devoted family, she is survived by her mother in law, Amanda Jefferson; uncle, Vernon (Betty) Crawley, several sisters in law and one brother in law, nieces and nephews, her favorite cousin, Rita Crewe, best friends, Janet Charity and Arlene Jones, as well as a loving care-giver Mrs. Florence Brown. Rae Smith was a loving, beautiful, caring, giving and humorous woman in all aspects of her life. She left a monumental impact on her family. She is loved and missed. May her soul rest in love, joy and peace as she provided all those traits to her family and friends. A funeral service will be held 2pm, Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Gilfield Baptist Church, 6640 Church Ln, Charles City, VA 23030. A viewing will be from 5pm-7pm, Friday, December 29, 2023, at Vincent Funeral Home, Providence Forge, VA.
