Robert Denver Shackleford Jr.

Robert Denver Shackleford, Jr. was born on January 15, 1943 in West Point, Virginia. He peacefully departed this life on May 5, 2019 surrounded by the love of his family and in the compassionate care of the nurses and companions at the Hospice House and Support Center of Williamsburg, Virginia. He was the only child born from the marriage of the late Robert D. Shackleford, Sr. and Morgan Marie Jackson. Subsequently, from their second marriages, he was blessed with five sisters and five brothers. Robert was raised by his maternal grandmother the late Lucille Carter Jackson, (Mama Cille) in West Point, VA. At an early age, Robert joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, West Point, VA. where he remained an active and dedicated member for most of his life. After moving to Williamsburg, he joined hands with the New Zion Baptist Church and became a member of the Greeters Ministry, the Men’s Fellowship, and the Men’s Prayer Group. He attended Beverly Allen Elementary in West Point, VA, graduated from King & Queen Central High School in 1961 and later completed Rappahannock Community College. Robert joined in marriage with Barbara Olivia Jordan in 1964 and was the father of two sons. Robert D. Shackleford, III, of West Point, VA and Roderick D. Shackleford of Hampton, VA. He was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren - “his little buddies”, Lauren Alexis and Wyatt “Robbie” and his step grandchildren, Brianna, Terrence, and KeShaun. Robert was well-known for his entrepreneurial involvements and his many other activities associated with his employment and community affiliations. He was employed at Chesapeake Corporation/St. Laurent from 1962 to 1998 retiring as a production supervisor. Robert’s passion for automobiles led him to become a salesman for Quinn Motor Company and a co-owner of Affordable Automobiles, West Point, VA. He was a founding member of the Middle Peninsula Investment Club and a former member of the Board of Directors for Baylands Federal Credit Union. Robert was elected by his classmates to be class President of ‘The King & Queen CHS Class of ‘61’. Through Robert’s leadership, the class remained a cohesive group and were dedicated philanthropic supporters of their alma mater, its graduates, and the community. In retirement, Robert developed a love for acquiring vintage furniture, restoring his finds for his own collection, and offering them for resale. He was also an avid league bowler and loved biking for as long as his health allowed. Besides his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Gary Shackleford and Walter Robinson, Jr. He is survived by his sons, Robert Denver, III and Roderick Daniel; grandchildren and step grandchildren; former wife of 50 years, Barbara; sisters, Rose Osbourne (Glenn), Belinda Kelly (Larry), Priscilla Vaughan, Diane Shackleford, and Annette Yates; brothers, James Robinson, Kevin and Eric Shackleford. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held 11AM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, West Point, VA 23181. A visitation will take place 5 to 7 PM Friday, May 17, 2019 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, VA 23181. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice House and Support Center of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, Virginia 23188.
