Verna T. Lewis

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Ps.116:15) Verna T. Lewis, 86, passed away on March 28, 2018 from her earthly life into eternal life with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Born on September 11, 1931 in Ashe County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Alton and Vesta Blevins Teague. In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Lee Lewis, Sr. (d. 2006) and her two brothers and two sisters. Left to cherish her memory are their children; Robert L Lewis, Jr (Gerianne), Ellen Lewis Ayers (Donise), Marian Lewis Wren (Don) and John R Lewis. She was a Godly example to her 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren whom she adored and loved spending time with. Mom was a long-time member of Olivet Baptist Church in King & Queen County where she loved to sing in the choir, teach Sunday School when needed and visit those members who couldn't attend. She also was able to attend Newington Baptist Church in Gloucester where she was active in the WMU, Clothes Closet program and enjoyed the fellowship and travels with the “VIP” group. After leaving Ashe County her family later moved to Kannapolis, NC where she developed her love for NASCAR and everything Earnhardt. She also had a love for the Dallas Cowboys, especially when they were playing the Redskins, Dad’s favorite team. Her son, Bob and his wife Gerianne introduced her to Tampa Bay Rays baseball and she enjoyed calling them after watching a game to discuss the plays. She loved flowers and was an avid gardener who could grow anything, bringing old tired plants back to life. Mom was employed by Farm Fresh for 10 years and then Walmart for 8 ½ years retiring in 2011 where many Gloucester residents were greeted by a warm smile from “Miss Verna”. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 6th at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. April 7, 2018 at Olivet Baptist Church, 25338 The Trail, Mattaponi, VA with burial following in the church cemetery.
