Vernell Dabney Wise

Vernell Dabney Wise was born on March 11, 1947, to the late Oather and Malcenia Dabney in King and Queen County, Virginia. She peacefully answered the Master’s call on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, with family by her side. Vernell was educated in King and Queen County Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1965. At an early age, Vernell was baptized at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church and later joined and became a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Hockley. In 1966, she joined in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Cornelious B. Wise, this union was blessed with one son. She was an extremely devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother. She lit up every room with her beautiful, dazzling smile, bringing warmth and comfort wherever she went. As she dedicated many years of service to working at Leggett Department Store and Bruce Adams, her passion for fashion and style shined brightly. A true fashion queen, she always wore the latest styles, flawlessly coordinating her outfits with her nails, makeup, and headwear. Vernell’s love for music and dancing was well known—even in illness, she never missed a chance to show off her dance moves when she was with family. She will always be remembered for her unwavering love for her husband, her deep devotion to family, and the joy she brought to those around her. She found great joy and pride in talking with her siblings, taking over the conversations of course, and eagerly awaiting the holidays when everyone would come together. She will forever remain in the heart of all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oather and Malcenia Dabney and brother, Norris Dabney. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and elegance, carried on by a dedicated husband of 58 years, Cornelious B. Wise; one son, Cornelious A. Wise (Paula); one-step daughter, Kennesha O’Neal; seven grandchildren, Maurice and Antione Broaddus, Khaila and Kyle Nelson, Letitia and Alexis O’Neal, and JaQuan Phillpott; her dear siblings, Jannie Woodson of Lebanon, PA, Arthur Dabney, Lue Jackson (Keith), Barbara Harvey, Terlyn Billups all of St. Stephens Church, VA, Clinton Dabney, Sr. (Gwen) of Tappahannock, VA; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Pearline Wise and Linda Edwards (Kalie); one brother-in-law, Ulyssess Wise, Sr.; host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held 1PM Friday, March 7, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Hockley, 2356 York River Rd, Shacklefords, VA 23156. A viewing will be held from 5PM-7PM Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, VA 23181.
