Wilbert Theadore Jones Sr.

On Sunday, September 29, 2019, Wilbert T. Jones, Sr. departed this life at the age of 76. Wilbert was born on October 4, 1942 in Charles City County, VA. The second of nine children, he was born to the late Vernell and Joseph H. Jones, Sr. Wilbert confessed Christ at an early age. He was a proud graduate of the Ruthville High School class of 1961 and continued to be an active member of Ruthville Alumni. Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Vernell and Joseph H. Jones, Sr.; three brothers, Joseph Jones Jr. I, Lloyd O. Jones, and David L. Jones; one sister Ethel Jones. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Grace B. Jones; 4 children Carla V. Cotman (Daryl), Tony O. Jones (Tana),Tammi J. Fox (Steve) and Wilbert T. Jones, Jr who was extremely devoted to his father acting as his scheduler, patient advocate, home health aid and Uber among many other things; seven grandchildren Shana N. Jones, Shante’ L. Crawley, Martia O.M. Jones, Torii A. Harrison, Victoria L. Fox, Richard J. Fox, Tony O. Jones Jr.; four great-grandchildren Zariya, Riccai, Tsia-Marie, and Roland IV; sisters Mary Rosetta Crawley and Sarah Ann James; brothers Thomas T. Jones (Laura) and Joseph H. Jones Jr, II; God-daughter Jenee’ Jones (Sintell); son-in-love Curtis Walker; several nieces and nephews and devoted friends Leslie and Juanita Canaday, along with a host of other family and friends. Wilbert was loving, caring, family-oriented, and always willing to help others. He was a general contractor for over 55 years; his handiwork can be seen around Charles City and surrounding areas. He was blessed to have built with his father the home in which he raised his family. Wilbert didn’t mind sharing his opinion and had no issues with letting you know if you were doing or fixing something the wrong way. In addition to building Wilbert enjoyed spending time in his community. For many years he was a Scout Master to the youth in the county devoting his time and energy developing young minds and training them on lifelong skills that many use to this day. He loved to share his memories of his troops and their adventures. You could always count on him to shed a tear when he saw one of his young men all grown up. He was a self-proclaimed expert fisherman; especially when fishing at Weyanoke with his friends. According to Wilbert, a true fisherman could fish while he worked, dropping his lines in the water at the beginning of the day, checking them at lunch, and bringing a cooler full home for dinner. Wilbert was an avid animal lover, riding horses with his children and grandchildren, raising chickens, ducks, pigs, and goats and even had a calf in the house… until Grace saw it. He taught his children and grandchildren; through chores, laughter, and skill building with the gift of time and patience, the value of hard work and being a person of good character. Wilbert had a tale to share with everyone he saw. And after a quick conversation, let him tell it you were either kinfolk or he knew your folks. He will be missed and was loved by many. A viewing will be held 12 to 1 PM, Friday, October 4th at Little Elam Baptist Church, Charles City, VA with the funeral service beginning at 1 PM.
