Alfreda Greene Bell

July 23, 1952 - September 9, 2021

Alfreda Greene Bell, 69, of Charles City County, transitioned from this life on Thursday, September 9, 2021. Mrs. Bell was the daughter of Emanuel Greene and Agnes Greene Leonard, both of whom predeceased her. She joined Gilfield Baptist Church during her childhood and as an adult became affiliated with Little Elam Baptist Church. She graduated from Barnetts Elementary School and Ruthville High School and later attended Virginia State University, where she majored in English. Few knew that she also wrote poetry. In 1973, Freda, as she was known to family and friends, married Rufus Bell, Jr. To that union was born two sons, Courtney Bell of West Point and Michael Bell of Raleigh, North Carolina. Along the way, she earned the reputation for being an efficient and skillful bank employee and at home a doting mother and loving wife. Blessed with the gifts of gardening, canning and cooking that she shared with both parents, she became known for her culinary delights that included wild game as well as seafood. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing. In addition to her husband and two sons, Mrs. Bell is survived by three grandchildren, Eleysia, Courtney, Jr., and Mya; a sister, Edna Greene Medford (Thomas) of Bowie, Maryland; two brothers, Guy Greene (Pamela) of Lanexa and André Greene of Chesterfield County; an uncle Louis Johnson (Barbara) of Charles City County; three aunts, Juanita Branch (Hugh) of Hartford, Connecticut, and Arnella Jones and Sheila Johnson of Charles City; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Eva Bell; six sisters-in-law, Annie Bowman (Glenn); Lash Miles, Edith Greene (Dwight), Eva Pugh (Kevin); Etta Charity (Roscoe), Gail Thompson (Hugo); nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends. A celebration of Mrs. Bell’s life will be held Saturday, September 18, at 4:00 p.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home Chapel. **Services for Mrs. Bell will be livestreamed at the following link 10 minutes prior to service: https://vimeo.com/event/825142
