Elvin Luis Zayas

March 24, 1961 - July 19, 2020

Elvin Luis Zayas, 59, of New Kent County, peacefully ended his battle with cancer on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Elvin is survived by his wife, Aida Zayas; his children, Steven, Adam, and Emily; his sister, Carmon Ramos and brothers, Frank Ramos, Eddie Ramos, Eric Cruz, Felix Cruz; brother in law, Peter Ponga, sister in law, Anna Williams; honorary family members Samantha Cunningham and Jackson Bush and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother Carmen Maysonet and father Jorge Zayas. Elvin was born in New York on March 24, 1961. He and his wife relocated to Virginia shortly after getting married in hopes of settling down and starting their forever. In 1990, Elvin became a member of the New Kent Volunteer Fire Department where he was proud to serve his new community, eventually becoming Chief of Company 1. The Fire Department afforded him many opportunities and allowed him to forge lifelong friendships. Elvin had a love for anything mechanical, restoring and working on cars and engines, as well as riding motorcycles, driving around his tractors, enhancing his golf cart, scuba diving, and a new found love for camping and creating the perfect campsite. Elvin was always ready to lend a hand, he was known as “The Guy” if you need help getting something fixed. He was always willing to share his knowledge and if he didn’t know how to fix it, he would figure it out. Always quick with witty banter or a wise crack, it was always in good nature and one of the ways he showed his love and affection. One of Elvin’s greatest attributes was his strong work ethic. He was determined to instill this in his children which was evident in the way he led by example and carried himself with integrity. Plain and simple Elvin’s philosophy was this: Help people and do the right thing. Elvin was dedicated to his family. He was a devoted husband, proud father, loving brother, beloved uncle, and loyal friend. He was affectionately known as “The Best Brother In Law In the World.” He had just celebrated 32 years together with the love of his life, Aida Zayas. In his spare time, he enjoyed working in his garage with his sons and nephews, relaxing at the campground, or spending time with his family. Elvin will be missed tremendously by his family and they all appreciate your love and support during this time. Elvin recently found peace and comfort through attending church at New Kent Christian Center. A Celebration of Life will be held at New Kent Christian Center 3 PM Saturday, August 8th, 2020, with the family receiving visitors from 2 - 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Kent Christian Center or the American Cancer Society.
