Evelyn Dorine James
August 18, 1948 - April 25, 2022
Evelyn Dorine James, age 73, slipped into a peaceful sleep as she answered the Master’s call on Monday, April 25, 2022 in York County, Virginia. Her life began on August 18,1948 in Richmond, VA, the daughter of the late Wilton Sr., and Christine Ella Brown. Being raised in a Christian home, she accepted Christ into her life at an early age and joined Escobrook Baptist Church. She attended King and Queen County Schools, where she grew up, and established lifelong friendships. After school, she became a wife, and mother, and explored employment careers at The Williamsburg Pottery, The College of William & Mary and later retired from Patriot’s Colony at Williamsburg, all located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Evelyn was a dedicated loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She nurtured her children, and worked very hard to provide a good life for them. Her life was centered around her children and grandchildren who affectionately called her “Ma”, and “Granny”. She was always there, the constant that kept the family strong, while guiding, lecturing, teaching, and always reminding them to remain strong in their faith, and never give up. One of her most memorable sayings was “you better pick up that Bible”! She wanted them to know GOD, and rely on him, as she knew she wouldn’t always be here. She had a giving spirit, and was always ready to help family and friends in need. She was the true definition of love, selflessness, strength, and light, and will truly be missed. She was preceded in death by her father, Wilton Brown Sr., mother, Christine Ella Brown, and sister Hattie Brown. Evelyn leaves to cherish her loving memory, her husband of thirty-three years, Larry J. James; two daughters, Ronette Moody (Floyd) of New Kent, VA and Tamekia Williams (Tyvelle) of Newport News, VA; two sons, Leroy “Anthony” Moody (Rosa) of Williamsburg, VA and Kevin Moody (Nellie) of Newport News, VA; three step-daughters, Deanna James (Jamar), Malissa James, and Letitia James; sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Pryor and Estelle Taylor; one brother, Wilton Brown Jr. (Cynthia); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her devoted canine companion “EJ”. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 6, 2022, at Escobrook Baptist Church, 2430 Elsom Mascot Road, Shacklefords, VA 23156. A viewing will take place 2 hours prior to the service on Friday at the church.
