James Alonzo Wright

On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, James Alonzo Wright transitioned from his earthly house, and entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. James was born on February 11, 1936, to James Melvin Wright Sr. and Marie Turlington Wright in Warwick County Va. He joined Denbigh Baptist Church in Newport News at an early age. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1954. James entered the U.S. Air Force in April of 1955. He was honorably discharged in July 1964 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was hired into Civil Service (Department of the Air Force) in April 1968 as an automotive mechanic. In May 1970, James was affected by a RIF (reduction in Force) and was assigned to the 1st Civil Engineering Squadron as a Heating Systems Mechanic. James completed the CDC Courses 54530 and 54550 in heating systems. He attended and successfully completed the Johnson Control School and the Honeywell Control School in Wichita Falls, Texas. He worked as a Production Controller and acting Supervisor of the heat shop in the absence of the assigned supervisor. He was considered an outstanding mechanic in his field and a great asset to 1st CES Heating and repair Shop. James retired from Langley Civil Service in April 1991. He also retired from Charles City County Public School System as a school bus driver in 2009. James was a member of the Blooming Olive Lodge #94 in Newport News Va., where he served as Worshipful Master from 1985-1986. His hobbies included working in his yard, keeping his automobiles in top notch condition, reading, and watching television. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Pearl Wright Snow, and a brother, James Melvin Wright, Jr. James is survived by his wife of 48yrs, Yvonne Adkins Wright; one daughter by a previous marriage, Y. Marie White (Kevin) of Fort Wayne Indiana; step-mother Maxine Wright of Richmond Va.; one step-brother, Frank Evans of Harrisburg Pa; two step-sisters, Joan Gentry of Hampton Va. and Jean Jones of Richmond Va.; three sisters-in-law, Doris Barczak (Richard), Irese Hazard (Warren) and Teresa Spears(Russell); two brothers-in-law, Oliver C Adkins Jr and Herman Adkins(Wanda). James also leaves to cherish his memories, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a step uncle, Carol Anderson of Richmond Va, along with a host of loving nieces and nephews, one devoted, Command Sergeant Major(Ret.) Mckinley Curtis III., four devoted friends, Douglas Quash, Elwood Banks, James Threat and William Braxton. A Celebration of Life will be held 11AM Friday, November 12, 2021 at Vincent Funeral Home, Providence Forge, VA.
