Lillian Carlton South

December 13, 1920 - August 3, 2021

Lillian C. South, 100, of Mattaponi went home to be with her heavenly father August 3, 2021. Lillian was the oldest living member of Olivet Baptist Church, the church she’d attended and loved all of her life. A true caregiver, Lillian provided care and direction for countless children throughout the years. She volunteered for 26 years in the Riverside Walter Reed Hospital’s Daffodil Gift Shop. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, John South; three brothers, Lucas and Thomas Carlton and Ernest “Bubba” Thurston. She is survived by her son, Wayne South (Margaret); daughter, Marlene Vannoy; three sisters, Edna Waxmunski, Virginia Easter and Nita Bunting; and a brother, Gene Thurston. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, August 7th at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point and interment will follow in Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery, c/o William Bryant Carlton, P.O. Box 25, King and Queen Courthouse, VA 23085. The family would like to thank Hospice of Virginia, Terry Newell and Brittany Morrow for their loving care.
