Martha Scott Payton

Martha Payton ,88 of Saluda Virginia passed away on April 12th in Gloucester Virginia Martha was born to the late Ruth Wright Scott and Rev. John Henry Scott on January 6th, 1932 in West Point Virginia. She spent her formative years growing up in West Point with a large and loving family. Martha went on to attend St.Pauls college in Lawrenceville Va. While in college she discovered her passion for home economics and health care for children. It was this interest that helped guide her in all of her future endeavors. She pledged Delta Sigma Theta sorority and continued to be an active and involved member her entire life, hosting many events and fund raisers for the sorority. Martha graduated St. Pauls in May of 1953 It is at St. Pauls college where she met the love of her life, Wadell Payton. They were married in April of 1954 and moved to Philadelphia ,Pa to be near family and start their lives together. She went on to join and establish herself as an active leader at The House of Prayer Episcopal church. While in Philadelphia she decided to continue her dream and continue her education in children’s special education. She joined the Philadelphia school district in 1964 and was placed as a teacher for children with special needs at the Hills School. She stayed there until her retirement in 1990. In 1992 Martha and Wadell decided they were ready to leave the big city and establish a much quieter life style. They were able to acquire the property where Wadell grew up in Saluda, VA. Martha built her dream house which allowed them to move “back home”. Now back in Virginia, Martha was again able to become an active member of the church where she grew up .St Pauls Episcopal Church in West Point ,VA. She enjoyed spending her time canning her preserves, making home grown apple sauce and baking her legendary pound cake while still finding time to get involved in community events. Martha is survived by one son Wadell Payton, Jr. of Olney MD and many loving family and friends.
