Mildred Ernestine Adkins

Mildred E. Adkins, 81 of Charles City Co entered eternal rest on Sunday, December 31, 2023. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Dewey Lee Adkins, parents Rudolph and Louise Adkins and brother Herman Adkins, Jr. Mildred is survived by her daughters Betsy Jamerson and Jennifer Christian (Ryan); grandchildren Raven Christian, Russell “R.J” Jamerson, Ryan “Neal” Christian and great granddaughter on the way; one sister, Chrystal Adkins; son-in-law Nat Jamerson and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mildred was a beloved member of Samaria Baptist Church and true servant of God. She served in many capacities within her church including being a Sunday School Teacher, GA Leader, Vacation Bible School worker and singing in the choir. She was an active member within WMU and the Dover Baptist Association serving in many capacities, always attending meetings at Samaria and several other churches. Mildred loved receiving cards, she was an active member of the Greeting Card Ministry at church and hoped those that received the cards received a blessing as well. She loved working for her Lord and Savior all her life. In her later years she accompanied groups on annual Mission trips to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, serving one week at the Cannon Ball Community as well as a second week with the Acteens at the Little Eagle Community. As a member of the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, she was instrumental in organizing the Elder Days activities and working with the youth when Indian School was in session. She served on the Tribal Council for many years and could always be counted on to volunteer in any capacity needed. She served with numerous civic organizations within the county such as the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society with a concentration in the Relay for Life events. She was a member of the Charles City County Fair Committee for many years. She especially loved being a part of the Home and Garden Exhibits. Volunteered at Charles City County Library in different capacities. In earlier years she was a substitute teacher in the Charles City County School System. Every person that she encountered, she considered a friend and numerous can consider themselves as special friends. She was a childcare provider for several children in her family and community. If there were three community events in a day you could count on seeing her at all three. She may have been late, but she was there. She just enjoyed life and believed in taking advantage of any opportunity to be around people. She loved taking pictures and most activities were documented by her. A few of her favorite sayings were “That is wonderful”, “It felt so good when...spoke to me”, and “It’s so pretty”. A funeral service will be held 2pm Friday, January 5, 2024, at Samaria Baptist Church, Providence Forge, VA. A viewing will be from 5pm-8pm, Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Vincent Funeral Home, Providence Forge, VA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Samaria Baptist Church for the Cannon Ball Mission Fund or the Chickahominy Indian Tribe.
