Glenda Gayle Dungee

Glenda Gayle Young Dungee was born on July 10, 1955, the 4th of six children born to the late Peter C. Young Sr. and Thelma Louise Young in Hustle Va. A 1973 graduate of Essex High School, Gayle later received her BS in Special Education from VA State College now VA State University in 1977. She was a proud Trojan in both high school and college, but her biggest cheers were saved for her Dallas Cowboys which greatly annoyed her Redskins fan brothers! Small yet feisty, Gayle was an ardent and strong advocate and supporter of Special Olympics having taught Special Education for 39 years at Essex Intermediate School. In April 1985, Gayle married Marcellus Dungee with whom she celebrated 32 years of marriage. They were blessed with beautiful daughters Andrea, Michelle and Staci whom she loved dearly and fussed at frequently! She was oh so very proud that all 3 daughters received their Master's Degrees. Later, she was a very proud Grandma to Camden, Caeden, and Maliyah who were her hearts joy! Even though sick, she babysat Maliyah (9 months) for as long as she could while retired. Maliyah may become a political analyst as she and Gayle had many discussions about the many political figures they watched on CNN and MSNBC together! Having accepted the Lord during her early childhood and baptized at the First Baptist Church, Loretto, VA, Gayle was a humble and private person, who not only talked the Christian talk, but walked the Christian walk in service at First Baptist Loretto, Antioch Baptist, and 2nd Mt Olive as an usher, choir member, Vacation Bible School director, Sunday school teacher. She (along with Marcellus and her girls) generously and privately helped many underprivileged kids in various school systems with coats, shoes, and supplies throughout the school year and holidays. While tiny in stature, Gayle was a mighty fighter/warrior for the underdog/ underprivileged, the overlooked. Gayle was predeceased by her father, sister Faye, brothers Elliott and Pete and sister in law Marlene Dungee Brown She will be missed and remembered by her husband Marcellus whom he affectionally called her “woman”; children, Andrea, Michelle, and Staci; grandchildren, Camden Lamont, Caeden Elijah, Maliyah Gabriella; mother Louise; sisters, Marilyn and Kimberly Young; seven sisters n law, Dr. Delores Dungee-Anderson, Yvonne Dungee, Jacquelyn Dungee-Byrd, Delva Dungee- Baytops, Carla Dungee-Drumgold, Carolyn Young, Karen Young; five brothers n law, Herbert W. Dungee Jr., George Anderson, Junius Brown, Kennard Drumgold and Ernest Baytops; one uncle, Emmett Young; one aunt, Martha Lumpkin; eight nieces, ten nephews, six great nieces, seven great nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends especially, a group of friends affectionately known as “The Birthday Club.” A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 30th at Essex Intermediate School, 912 Intermediate Circle, Tappahannock, VA 22560. No repast. .
